Xbox One Twitch app gives you credit for watching Tomb Raider streams

Rise Of The Tomb Raider

Now that the new Rise Of The Tomb Raider game has launched on Microsoft's Xbox One console Crystal Dynamics, Twitch and Xbox have today announced the addition of two new interactive features that can be experienced within the game.

Viewers who watch through the Xbox One Twitch app will also be rewarded for participating with in-game credits that are given out when the streamer reaches certain milestones within the game, provided that the streamer is also using the Xbox One Twitch app. They can then use the credits to purchase their own Expedition Cards to be used when they play in Expedition mode themselves. Sporadically during the course of the game, the choice between two Expedition challenge cards pops up.

Anything can happen when a card is activated. Whichever card has the most votes wins, and the action it contains plays out in the game for 5 minutes. Other modifiers include one where Lara leaves a rainbow trail in her wake and the ultra-hot mode that sets her on fire and lets her ignite her enemies as well. It also reminds me a lot of The Running Man or Hunger Games whose stories featured viewers who could influence their respective games from the outside, albeit these are much, much darker contexts. Each card affects the game in a different way, and viewers are able to vote on which one they want to activate.

The broadcaster has to take side missions or challenges, challenge Tombs or earn specific achievements. These rewards are redeemed using the in-game marketplace. Each gift remains redeemable for 30 days.

This is not the first time Twitch has allowed viewers to interact with what they are watching, but it is the first time a major title has been made available with this feature.

If all turns out well with this strategy, future games could possibly receive a similar feature, effectively changing the industry as gaming studios design their next big titles for game streaming.

Is this enough to get you thinking about picking upĀ Rise of the Tomb Raider?
