Wolves sign defender Semedo from Barcelona

Wolves have found a replacement for Matt Doherty in the form of Nelson Semedo

At 26 years of age, Semedo will be an excellent signing for the Europa League quarter-finalists as they look to build on last season's achievements.

"Wolves have completed the signing of Portugal global Nelson Semedo from FC Barcelona".

Wolves returned to the Premier League in 2018 after a six-year absence and qualified for the Europa League at the end of the team's first season back in the top division.

Semedo wrote: "Thank you very much Barcelona for giving me the dream of wearing this shirt".

His signing boosts Wolves' options at right-back following the departure of Matt Doherty to Tottenham earlier in the summer transfer window.

Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo has emphasised the need for more signings after a 3-1 loss to Manchester City, but would not be drawn into rumours the club is close to signing Semedo.

It's a very good team. He did very good things here in Wolves, and in other teams too. At Wolves, he will link up with a sizeable Portuguese contingent that includes Fabio Silva, Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves and Rui Patricio. "Nelson's signing shows we will never stop progressing and we are still hungry and humble in our heart", Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said. "I want to thank my team-mates, the staff, the fans and all the people who have helped me from the moment I arrived until today".

"It isn't often that we have the opportunity to sign a world-class player from a world-class club".

He said: "I talked with some of them and they told me very good things about the club, about the team".

"Having won two Portuguese league titles and three national cups, Semedo lured in Spanish giants Barcelona in 2017 and he repaid their faith during 124 appearances". For sure I'm going to learn a lot from him.
