Wasserman Schultz out as DNC chair after email leak

Share

The bitterness and frustration among the party's more progressive wing increased after the website Wikileaks published some 19,000 DNC emails suggesting the party was favoring Clinton. "The party leadership must also always remain impartial in the presidential nominating process, something which did not occur in the 2016 race".

The recent leak of internal Democratic committee emails - apparently showing the supposedly neutral national committee's bias against Sanders - has already whipped up resentment among the Sanders supporters who are gathered around Philadelphia City Hall.

The DNC Rules Committee rescinded Wasserman Schultz's position as Convention Chairwoman, and have now named Rep. Marcia Fudge, (D) OH, as permanent Chair of the Convention. "And no one works harder for her constituents in Congress than Debbie Wasserman Schultz".

Chanting "Hell No, DNC, we won't vote for Hillary" and "This is what democracy looks like", the marchers headed from City Hall down Broad Street, the main north-south artery that leads from the city center to the convention site about 4 miles away.

Clinton had given the indefatigable Wasserman Schultz a shout-out Saturday in Miami, at a rally where Clinton introduced running mate and Virginia Sen.

But Sanders repeatedly voiced frustration with a DNC and party establishment he felt was stacked against him, and the resentment from Sanders and his supporters threatened to disrupt the convention. "But she is stubborn", the Clinton ally said. Pressure on Schultz increased further after Sanders called for her resignation.

But, in a sign of possible unity, he said that the revelations did not change his endorsement of Clinton and again vowed to help her defeat GOP nominee Donald Trump. And it undermines Clinton's claim that her party's convention would reveal markedly less disunity than the Republican convention in Cleveland last week.

Wasserman Schultz, a U.S. representative from Florida, has served as the Democratic party chair for more than five years. Let us know in comments. There's simply no one better at taking the fight to the Republicans than Debbie-which is why I am glad that she has agreed to serve as honorary chair of my campaign's 50-state program to gain ground and elect Democrats in every part of the country, and will continue to serve as a surrogate for my campaign nationally, in Florida, and in other key states.

Earlier in the day, Wasserman Schultz was replaced as chair of the Democratic National Convention, which begins Monday in Philadelphia.

Some of those emails appear to show party officials questioning Sanders's viability and discussing how to use his faith against him.

The publication of the emails comes just a weekend before the start of the Democratic convention, where a major objective will be to unify the Democratic Party by winning over Sanders' voters.

At least one group will attempt to hold the world's largest "fart-in" by having a large bean meal shortly prior, to protest the "rhetorical flatulence of Hillary Clinton", according to local activist Cheri Honkala of the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign.

David Axelrod, Barack Obama's presidential campaign advisor in 2008 and 2012, told CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday that she should resign, saying, "I would ask her to step aside".
