Washington state National Guard members sent to DC for inauguration

Responding to a request by the Federal government, more than 100 Wyoming National Guard Soldiers and Airmen have volunteered to support crowd control, communications and logistics during the 59th Presidential Inauguration in Washington D.C. on January 20. "It's a tradition because the inauguration is a national security event".

In addition to the Guard's growing presence in the nation's capital, nearly 1,900 Guard members are protecting state capitols and key infrastructure around the county.

They will join more than 20,000 other troops and police from across the country on January 20 and in the days leading up to the inauguration in protecting the U.S. Capitol and supporting federal partners in "a number of different roles as determined by the lead agency", according to a tweet.

It was signed by House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, House Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson, House Oversight Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler.

Statehouses around the country - many of which have faced sometimes violent protests - are also facing heightened security risks. Threats of violence have surfaced on social media around rallies planned for Sunday and Inauguration Day.

A double row of chain-link fencing circles the Arizona State Capitol. The legislature canceled meetings next week, citing concern over credible threats.

An additional 14 airmen from the Utah Air National Guard's 130th Engineering Installation Squadron will provide communication support for President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration.

Officials are trying to head off a repeat of the violence that struck the Capitol on January 6.

National Guard troops patrolled the California Capitol and streets of downtown Sacramento on Saturday. Some 25,000 National Guard troops have been OK'd to descend on the city at the behest of the Secret Service.

Authorities were on high alert.

In New York, state police have taken steps "to harden security in and around the State Capitol in Albany" ahead of Biden's inauguration, CNN reported. Gen. Al Dohrmann, said he responded to a request from the guard in D.C. seeking assistance.

"Anyone who can avoid the area around the Capitol and Mall this week should do so", Beyer wrote on Twitter.

The alarm extended beyond government.
