Was Trump's speech a success?

Donald Trump "humbly and gratefully" accepted the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday night, passing a critical threshold for a months-long showdown with presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Cleveland (CNN)In a party convention beset by distractions - Melania Trump's plagiarism, Ted Cruz's defiance - there's been one part of the program that delegates say has been almost flawless: Donald Trump's grown children.

"This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction and weakness". He began by stating that the convention was happening "at a moment of crisis" for the United States.

Another area of focus was the people Trump said America has forgotten.

But in this case, I suspect the reason was simpler and more personal.

"I have a message for all of you: The crime and violence today that afflicts our nation will soon and I mean very soon come to an end. Beginning on January 20th, 2017 (when the next president is inaugurated) safety will be restored".

Take equal pay ― this issue is an inevitable one in a modern presidential campaign, and Trump has had to face it down a few times. He accused President Barack Obama of inflaming racial tensions rather than calming them. Only Donald Trump, he said, can change that. My plan is the exact opposite of the radical and unsafe immigration policy of Hillary Clinton.

"She gave us enormous insight into him and the kind of man he is", said retiree Fernando C. deBaca, a 78-year-old New Mexico delegate. "Reducing taxes will cause new companies and new jobs to come roaring back into our country".

And talking trade, Trump said the county's manufacturing trade deficit has reached an all-time high of $800 billion in a single year.

"I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence... of the hateful foreign ideology", he said to some cheers from the crowd.

Outside of the USA, allies are also closely watching Trump's address, which comes the day after a suggestion that he might not defend America's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partners as president.

"This includes working with our greatest ally in the region, the State of Israel".

He stuck to the controversial proposals of his primary campaign, including building a wall along the entire U.S.-Mexico border and suspending immigration from nations "compromised by terrorism".

"I only want to admit individuals into our country who will support our values and love our people".

Three members of Trump's clan capitalized on their prime-time speaking slots, and his eldest daughter, Ivanka, was set to introduce him Thursday night.

The Texas senator pinned his hopes on Trump losing the general election when he refused to endorse the party's nominee.

The Trump campaign and supporters who spoke at the convention similarly panned the speech as a political misstep that fit within Cruz's reputation as an outsider unwilling to fall in line with the Party.
