Walmart Parking Lots Will Transform into Drive-In Theaters This Summer
Jul 03 2020
From August to October, Walmart will turn 160 of its parking lots into contactless drive-in movie theaters, for a combined 320 family-friendly showings.
Throughout July, families in; Arlington, Texas., Pasadena, Calif., Nassau County, and New York City, N.Y., will be treated to Tribeca Drive-In screenings of modern classics and family favorites, like Wonder Woman and Space Jam, with a mix of ticketed and free events honoring frontline workers.
If you can't go to the actual movie theaters these days and remember what it's like to plop yourself down in a seat with a bucket of popcorn while waiting for the lights to dim, at least there's a new socially distanced option for getting your film fix.
With many traditional movie theaters remaining closed across the country, drive-ins have seen a resurgence in popularity.
The movies will be put on by the Tribeca Film Festival. More information can be found here: walmartdrive-in.com. Each moviegoer orders their drive-in essentials online and can pick up curbside on the way to their movie.
Evenings at the drive-in will include movies, celebrity and filmmaker appearances and, in true drive-in fashion, concessions - except now they'll be delivered straight to your auto, Walmart said.
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon released a statement saying the company must go further in hiring more black associates across all levels and positions. "Through our digital means and vast footprint of stores, we're hoping to bring some summer fun to families across the country". The deal widens the reach of Tribeca's already-planned drive-in series coming to a smaller selection of locations nationwide, serving up a curated lineup of movie favorites like Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Black Panther, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and more.
