The WNBA also created the Kobe and Gigi Advocacy Award which will recognize those who make contribution to the visibilty, perception and advancement of girls' and women's basketball.
Bryant, Chester and Altobelli were among nine killed in a January 26 helicopter crash in Calabasas, CA, one that also claimed the lives of National Basketball Association legend Kobe Bryant, John and Keri Altobelli, Sarah Chester, Christina Mauser and Ara Zobayan.
"Kobe was not only a legendary basketball star, but a devoted youth coach, and had a tremendous impact on countless young players", WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said while kicking off the draft.
While it's still unclear when the next real sporting event will be, April 17 brought a bit of a return to sports with the 2020 WNBA Draft.
The inaugural award will be announced by the league and the Bryant family at the 2021 WNBA All-Star game.
"I've been working for this for my entire basketball career and super excited to see that come to fruition, " said Ionescu, as reported by ESPN. "Thank you. WNBA, out".
During the draft, Engelbert announced the picks from home, with the players also waiting to be selected from their homes.
"Kobe and Gigi loved the WNBA".
