US Capitol: Driver dead after ramming police barricade

Police officers gather near a car that crashed into a barrier on Capitol Hill in Washington Friday

Both Capitol Police officers were taken to the hospital, with one of the officers dying as a result of undisclosed injuries, officials said.

The vehicle hit a barricade just outside the Senate, on a street that had recently been reopened after the January 6 insurrection. The suspect was shot and died at the hospital.

Security at the Capitol has been very heavy since a mob attacked police and overran security checkpoints on January 6 after attending a political rally organized by former President Donald Trump.

"I just ask that the public continue to keep U.S. Capitol Police and their families in your prayers", Pittman said.

The locality around the US Capitol and congressional office buildings were immediately put on a lockdown as dozens of marked and unmarked police cars raced toward America's legislative seat.

Law enforcement officials told the Associated Press the driver of the auto has been shot.

US Capitol police said the suspect was shot after he got out of the vehicle and ran towards the officers brandishing a knife.

That sequence of events aligns with what a senior congressional aide and a US Capitol Police source told CNN earlier Friday. Pittman said one of the officers was killed and the other was injured. "Officer Evans had been a member of the United States Capitol Police for 18 years".

Pittman said the U.S. Capitol Police did not have the suspect on file, so there is at present no indication that "there's any nexus to any member of Congress".

Both of the Capitol Police officers received emergency medical attention.

The U.S. Capitol complex was placed on lockdown after the shooting, and staffers were told they could not enter or exit buildings.

The Congress is in recess and most lawmakers are away. The officials could not discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

The D.C. National Guard said it deployed a quick reaction force, comprising National Guard soldiers and airmen, to the Capitol complex to support the U.S. Capitol Police.

Video posted online showed a dark-coloured sedan crashed against a vehicle barrier and a police dog inspecting the vehicle. Fencing that prevented vehicular traffic near that area was recently removed, but there was additional interior fencing between the checkpoint and the building.

A law enforcement official told CNN at least one of the officers was stabbed.

President Biden was in Camp David, Md., when the incident took place, according to the White House.
