The US has the most cases of coronavirus of any country in the world.

In addition to almost 10,000 new cases in Florida, Texas reported over 9,000 cases and California reported more than 7,800 new infections.

The numbers have been surging in recent weeks amid a rapid expansion in testing.

The United States reported at least 60,565 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, a new record increase and the second day in a row infections have risen by at least 60,000, according to a Reuters tally.

Even outside the nation's three most populous states, cases are rising. Only Chile and Peru rank higher, according to Johns Hopkins. "We are in a very hard situation", said Thursday the infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci, who advises the White House on the crisis of the Covid-19.

"I would think we need to get the states pausing in their opening process", he said, although he added: "I don't think we need to go back to an extreme of shutting down".

Many Americans are hesitant to return to public spaces and patronise businesses despite President Donald Trump's efforts to downplay the risks.

The deadly Covid-19 across the world has now infected more than 12 million people, with 5.48 lakh people succumbing to the virus that was first reported in late December 2019.

"We have tested 40,000,000 people". India had the third most cases, with more than 700,000.
