Unai Emery to coach Spanish club Villarreal for 3 seasons

Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery has been appointed as head coach of La Liga side Villarreal on a three-year deal.

Emery arrives at Villarreal with a high reputation, despite his disappointing 18-month spell with Arsenal, which ended with him getting sacked earlier this season after leading the London based outfit to the Europa League final in his first campaign.

Villarreal have won the race for his signature, with the 48-year-old opting to take on a new challenge back his homeland.

"Unai Emery is a reputed coach with significant experience in worldwide football".

Villarreal enjoyed an upturn in fortune after the Covid-19 stoppage, winning seven of their final 11 matches to secure fifth place in LaLiga and Europa League qualification.

He also enjoyed a brief spell in Russian Federation, coaching Spartak Moscow for six months in 2012.

"After his successful time at Sevilla, he moved to Paris Saint-Germain, with whom he added to his trophy cabinet, winning a Ligue 1, two Coupes de France, two Coupes de la Ligue and two French Super Cups".

Emery has had his fair share of success in Spain where he made Sevilla back to back thrice Europa League winners.

He succeeded Arsene Wenger at Emirates Stadium in 2018 but failed to secure a return to the Champions League, losing the Europa League final 4-1 to Chelsea past year.
