Trump says he isn't sure what Rep. John Lewis' legacy will be

Axios' Jonathan Swan broke down some of the most stunning moments from his interview with Donald Trump, explaining how he got the president to reveal more than his "good sales message" on his Covid-19 response and other pressing issues.

Until now, the district attorney's inquiry had appeared largely focused on hush-money payments made in the runup to the 2016 presidential election to two women who said they had affairs with Trump.

When the journalist asked Trump what the category the U.S. was lowest in, he handed him a graph.

He handed Swan a chart showing deaths by country in proportion to the total number of cases each country had seen. I'm talking about death as a proportion of the population.

"John Lewis is lying in state at the U.S. Capitol". Mr. Trump seemed to suggest, without evidence, that South Korea was reporting inaccurate numbers.

"You can't, you can't do that", Trump responded.

"You're doing death as a proportion of cases". I'd wish you well, I'd wish a lot of people well.

As of Tuesday morning, among the 20 countries most affected by COVID-19 in the world, the USA has the fourth-highest number of COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 people, ranking behind only the United Kingdom, Peru and Chile, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Vance's lawyers said Trump was not entitled to know the scope and nature of the grand jury investigation.

Many praised Swan for holding his cool while Trump desperately tried to rattle him with statistics and even question his journalistic skills.

Swan then asked Trump whether he thinks Lewis and his story are "impressive".

The president preferred to focus on deaths relative to caseloads, which helps sidestep the issue that the United States has a massive number of infections. "It is actually controlled, as long as you may regulate it".

"He didn't come to my inauguration, he didn't come to my State of the Union speeches - and that's ok, that's his right".

The president, however, persisted in claiming that the USA was doing much better than the rest of the world in terms of deaths.

Trump: "Here's one right here, United States". Earlier this year, Dr. Anthony Fauci and several other coronavirus task force members said during a House hearing that they had not been directed to "slow down" testing, and said it was the administration's goal to conduct more testing.

"Didn't work out for Congress, didn't work out for Mueller, didn't work out for anybody", Trump added.

Unable to see past an nearly four-year-old slight, President Trump, who did not attend any portion of the late congressman's six-day funeral, insisted in the interview Monday that the late congressman made a "big mistake" by not attending his inauguration. I've talked to your people.

"He was a person that devoted a lot of energy and lot of heart to civil rights". He also made the claim that "no one has done more for Black Americans than I have". The decision cleared the way for prosecutors to seek Trump's financial records, but the court also said Trump could return to the lower court in Manhattan, where he first sued to stop the subpoena, and raise new objections.
