Three people are dead amid an active shooter incident in Austin, Texas

Three people were declared dead at the scene of a shooting in Austin, Texas on Sunday afternoon, according to a tweet from the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.

The shooting took place near the Great Hills Trail, with office buildings on one side and apartments on the other.

Residents are asked to avoid the area as it is still an active scene.

The shooting appears to be "a domestic situation that is isolated", a tweet from Austin police said.

At a news conference later in the afternoon, Joseph Chacon, the interim police chief of the Austin Police, told reporters that the alleged suspect, Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41, was still on the loose and was considered "armed and risky".

She said the first 911 call came in at 11:44 a.m. and that three adults were fatally shot in northwest Austin near The Arboretum.

Police are reportedly searching the woods near the crime scene for the shooter. "Some had pistols, some had rifles and they were strapping on bulletproof vests".

Police said a portion of a nearby highway would be shut down in both directions.
