NASA and its global partners have assigned crew members for Crew-2, which will be the second operational SpaceX Crew Dragon flight to the worldwide Space Station as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program.
The ESA spaceman will blast off alongside seasoned NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur, as well as Japan's Akihiko Hoshide, for a six-month-long stint in orbit.
Putting four astronauts on SpaceX's spring 2021 mission, dubbed Crew-2, will bring the quantity of individuals staffing the ISS to seven, permitting "NASA to effectively double the amount of science that can be conducted in space", the office said Tuesday.
On May 31, the Dragon spacecraft became the first American spacecraft to launch American astronauts after the Space Shuttle program came to an end in 2011.
The SpaceX spacesuits combine seamlessly with the Crew Dragon spacecraft. Her mission will be the Crew Dragon's second in a series of at least six round-trips to and from the International Space Station (ISS).
Crew Dragon will soon be departing in the ISS shortly, and NASA will be able to reevaluate it and utilize the hardware every time it requires. NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley are established to arrive again to Earth, leaving the International Place Station on August 1 and splashing down in the Atlantic on August 2. He first launched aboard space shuttle Endeavour for a visit to the station on the STS-126 mission in 2008, then aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft for Expedition 49/50 in 2016. McArthur operated the shuttle's robotic arm over the course of the 12 days and 21 hours she spent in space, capturing the telescope and moving crew members during the five spacewalks needed to fix and upgrade it. She has gone to space twice but has made only one trip to the space station in 2004 and was part of the last Hubble telescope servicing mission in 2009 where she spent 12 days and 21 hours in space. SpaceX shared an within seem at the spacesuit layout in a video released Monday that features some insight into 1 of the most obvious parts of the Crew Dragon mission.
The mission, carried out aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, was the second of three mission to deliver the Japanese Experiment Module (KIBO) to the ISS.
