Spain has detected its second known case of the South African coronavirus variant, officials said on Wednesday, although data suggested a third wave of contagion that has roiled the country since December was slowing.

"While to date only one case has been identified, it seems highly likely that there will be more in the coming weeks and months".

The E484K mutation has now been found in 11 B.1.1.7 viruses according to the latest PHE research. Researchers believe the mutation could help the virus escape the antibodies produced by the body after a previous infection or after receiving a vaccine shot.

But seeing the same kind of genetic mutation in the UK's variant does not mean it will necessarily have the same effect.

The variant's first mutation affected its "spike protein", the receptor that allows the virus to latch on to cells.

Vaccine maker Novavax on Tuesday said its vaccine appeared to be less effective against the variants found in South Africa.

Vaccine effectiveness is a deeply concerning issue in the face of viral mutations.

Professor Martin Michaelis, virologist and professor of molecular medication at the University of Kent, defined the E484K mutation additional.

The transferable strain from South Africa has led to a surge in cases in the UK.

The new mutation of the Covid-19 variant, called E484K, has been found in 11 samples examined by scientists.

The emergence of the mutation to the variant first discovered in Britain highlights how complicated exiting COVID-19 lockdown will be even once vaccines are rolled out.

"Vaccines can be quickly adapted to cover new strains, but it still takes time until such modified vaccines will be available".

Unlike the N501Y mutation that made the United Kingdom variant more contagious, the E484K mutation switches a negatively charged acid for a positive one, making it incredibly hard for a bodies antibodies to identify and latch onto the virus, similar to reversing a magnet's polarity.

He added: "There is also concern that the South African variant might be able to more efficiently re-infect individuals who have previously been infected with the original form of the virus".
