Sonic the Hedgehog Series ‘Sonic Prime’ Heads to Netflix in 2022

Sonic Prime Netflix Sega show series

SEGA and WildBrain will "jointly participate across production, distribution and licensing", with WildBrain's Vancouver studio to be responsible for animating the series.

"Sonic is a beloved character and holds a special place in everyone's heart including my own", enthuses Netflix director of original animation, Dominique Bazay. Now, Netflix has gone ahead and made it official: the Sonic the Hedgehog animated series does exist, and it's called Sonic Prime.

The 24-episode series will feature the iconic video game character on a high-octane adventure where the fate of a odd multiverse rests in his hands. Man of Action Entertainment, creators of Ben 10 and the characters and team in the Academy Award-winning feature Big Hero 6, have been brought on as showrunners and Executive Producers for the series.

Not much else is known at this point but tomorrow is Hedgehog Day, so it would be fair to expect more Sonic-related news of some kind.

"Sonic the Hedgehog is a global entertainment icon that has captivated audiences since its video game debut in 1991", said Ivo Gerscovich, Chief Brand Officer at SEGA. Sonic Prime will a collaboration between SEGA, WildBrain Studio and Man of Action Entertainment.

"Redemption?" Given that this is a cartoon for kids, I have to assume the reason Sonic needs redemption is because he left the Chaos Emeralds on a park bench for Dr. Robotnik to steal or something, but calling the show "a journey of self-discovery and redemption" makes it sound like the hedgehog is trying to atone for his sins. Total sales of the series including both packaged and digital downloads count over 360 million units. Following its success, a Sonic the Hedgehog sequel was in immediately put into development and is set now set for an April 2022 release.
