The man, from the north Brisbane suburb of Strathpine, contracted the United Kingdom strain of COVID from a male friend in Stafford.

He is infected with the B.1.1.7 strain, also referred to as the United Kingdom variant, a mutation known to be more transmissible and more deadly than older variants.

It is unknown, besides the people who attended the house party, how many contacts the Strathpine man has.

We were told at the time there were 25 people who attended ... we needed to investigate, track those 25 people down and get them into quarantine.

Health officials say the man was infected by a 26-year-old male friend from Stafford, a northern suburb of Brisbane, who tested positive for the virus on Thursday. Along with the nine venues visited by the Stafford man, there are now 24 venues that are considered possible exposure sites.

Queensland Health said on Saturday night a Strathpine man, 25, had hosted a house party between being tested for coronavirus and receiving his results which is a period when he should have been self-isolating.

Staff prepare to test people at a Covid-19 testing station in Sydney last December.

Eighteen contacts of the Stafford case are now self-isolating and undergoing testing.

From 5.00 pm tonight, home gatherings will be limited to 30 people around the state, while people are also being urged to wear masks in settings that they can't guarantee social distancing.

"We don't know where this virus is next going to pop up but as I've always said if we can find the first case in a cluster, not the fortieth, we'll be able to get on top of it much more quickly", Young said.

He had visited several locations across Brisbane, including a Westfield shopping centre in the city's east.

Contact tracers are paying particular attention to the Carindale mall and Mama's Italian Restaurant in Redcliffe.

"This is a huge job now that we have to do because we've got more of this community transmission", Premier Annastacia Palasczuk said.

Palaszczuk revealed concerns that case numbers could rapidly increase through the week.

"The initial two gentlemen and now a brother of one of those that we think could be that link between the PA doctor who was infectious two weeks ago and this cluster, then we have two colleagues of the second new case who have tested positive yesterday and one of those people was in Gladstone for three days while they were infectious so we're working very closely there to identify venues that person was at", Chief Health Officer Jeanette Young said.

The doctor visited four venues in the city's south while she was infectious.

Aged care, hospitals, prisons, and disability care homes in the Brisbane City and Moreton Bay Council areas have been closed to visitors.
