"Our community is bearing the brunt of the winter surge, experiencing huge numbers of cases, hospitalisations and deaths, five times what we experienced over the summer". The variant has already been detected in neighboring San Bernardino County and San Diego.

The Jackson County Health Department and Henry Ford Allegiance Health have increased their COVID-19 vaccine distribution and plan to expand once more vaccine is available, officials said January 15.

L.A. County's case total surpasses that of Illinois' Cook County (429,270 cases) and Arizona's Maricopa County (407,631 cases) combined, according to John Hopkins University data.

The high Covid-19 rates are being compounded by a slow rollout of vaccinations in a county of 10 million residents.

State officials on Friday reported a total of 7,597 people hospitalized in the county due to COVID-19, down from 7,715 on Thursday and below the 8,000-plus patients reported most of last week. Public health officials warned earlier this week that the actual number of coronavirus cases could be much higher, saying that as many as 1 in 3 residents have been infected since the pandemic began past year.

Los Angeles City Fire spokesman David Ortiz spoke to CNN at the Dodger Stadium where vaccines were being administered Saturday.

Experts have pointed to high-density and multigenerational living in Los Angeles' hardest hit neighborhoods as risk factors, plus a large essential workforce that must report to work in person rather than staying home.

"It feels like you're waking up to a nightmare, every day".

"We too want to expand vaccinations as quickly as possible to those 65 and older", Simon said. These workers have earlier handled a lot of COVID-19 positive patients and seen their sufferings. "As vaccine supply improves, more residents will become eligible for vaccinations".

At least 31.1 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been distributed across the US and at least 12.2 million of them have been administered, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We recognize seniors and others are understandably anxious and in many cases frustrated about the delay in receiving vaccine.

There have been 187,691 new cases of Covid-19 and 3,151 new deaths from the virus reported in the U.S. as of Saturday 10 p.m. ET, according to John Hopkins University, taking the USA totals to at least 23.7 million cases and 395,650 deaths.
