"The message is hands off", he says.

"He can still add numbers to his game but he is a massive asset to us and we want to keep Ryan Kent here".

That offer has been rejected by Rangers and Gerrard is unhappy with the approach so fired a warning about any future bids. That's the truth and the reality.

"But you know that Premier League teams hold a lot of power and that's the reality, that's the way it is".

However, Rangers are understandably loathed to lose a player they only signed permanently from Liverpool less than a year ago.

Kent was voted the best young player in Scotland last season and stayed on in Glasgow despite interest overseas.

Rangers paid an initial fee of around £6.5million for the player and he has gone on to develop impressively under Gerrard, leading to interest back in England.

"Ryan is a player we admire very much here". We bought him here on loan and he did ever so well, then we went and bought him and he's done ever so well and is progressing very, very quickly here.

"Yes, we have had contact from Leeds, and an opening bid has been really strongly rejected".

'We want the player to see here, as do the board. We will always put up a tough fight to keep the top talent here at Rangers'.

Goalkeeper Illan Meslier has also signed on a permanent basis from Lorient after a successful loan last season, whilst Jack Harrison has returned for a further season, the winger joining for a third successive loan spell from Manchester City.

Klopp versus Bielsa is the sort of narrative the start of the season was looking for.

He scored the victor at Pittodrie against Aberdeen in the opening day 1-0 win before impressing in a 3-0 rout of St Johnstone at Ibrox.

"I have spoken to Ryan and he is totally focused on the match tomorrow".
