PS5 releasing Holiday 2020, officially called PlayStation 5, Sony confirms

PS4 system software update version 7.00

Ryan indicated that Sony is working to further gamer immersion with its fifth generation console, which means that the long-standing rumble feature will be ditched in favor of haptic feedback. Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. The underpinnings of the PlayStation 5 are similar to Microsoft's own next-gen console, called (for now) Project Scarlett. It allows Sony Xperia users to stream games from the PlayStation 4 console to the smartphone (while you're on the same network) and play the games using a DualShock controller or the on-screen buttons on your smartphone itself.

As well as the console announcement, Sony has given details on what players can expect from the new controller on one of its many blog posts.

Cerny also discussed the PS5's new UI, which will provide access to key information for a game (such as joinable multiplayer games and single-player progress) without you having to boot it up.

Now, the company has unveiled more details outside of the hardware about the console, including that it will drop during the holiday season of 2020.

Physical disks for the PlayStation 5 will use a 100GB optical disks, and the system will still include a 4k Bluray Player. Wired was also impressed with the improved haptics/rumble in the controller, reporting this of their time playing the PS4 VR game Astrobot Rescue Mission with it: "On ice, a high-frequency response made the thumbsticks really feel like my character was gliding".

With all of these features considered, Sony says that they can "produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions".

The new feature supports US English and converts party chat to text, but it will also allow users to enter text that is read aloud to other party members. It's now possible to play alongside 16 rather than just eight friends. Do you plan on buying a PS5 right outta the gate, or will you hang back until it racks up a few exclusives you can't live without?

Let's Go Digital's Ilse Jurrien said: 'Looking at the design, the device seems to have something to do with gaming'.
