In a major announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended the Pradhanmantri Garib Kalyan Yojana till November 2020.
"The need of the hour is that everyone take the same level of precaution as during lockdown, especially in containment zones".
Reacting to Mr. Modi's 17-minute long address, the Congress said it was disappointing, didn't match the hype that was generated before the speech and the Prime Minister seemed "preoccupied with the idea of Bihar Assembly elections". Over Rs 90,000 crore will be spent on this, PM Modi said. Furthermore, he said that nearly ₹31,000 crore has been deposited in the bank accounts (Jan Dhan accounts) of almost 20 crore families in the last three months.
PM Modi had last addressed the nation on May 12 when he announced a Rs 20 lakh crore financial package to boost the economy recovering from the lockdown.
On Sunday, PM Modi in his monthly "Mann ki Baat" Radio address had said that India is friendly country but it is also capable of giving befitting reply to the adversaries. "This is the season of cough, fever and cold which requires cautiousness", he added.
Under the scheme, more than 800 million people have been getting five kilograms of wheat or rice per month, along with one kilogram of pulses per household. The Prime Minister added that people must maintain discipline and those not following the rules, need to be stopped and made aware.
Mr. Modi said, if one looks at the death rate due to corona, India is still in a very stable situation as compared to other countries.
The Prime Minister highlighted India's commitment to play an enabling role in the vaccination efforts against COVID-19.
PM Modi in his March 19 address had announced "Janta Curfew" on March 22. On April 14, he extended the lockdown period till May 3.
