The Delta variant now accounts for nearly all of the UK's coronavirus cases, according to Public Health England.

For this latest round, 108,911 people swabbed themselves at home and their samples were analysed by PCR testing 135 of these were positive, of which the vast majority (around 90 per cent) were the Delta variant at the end of the study round.

New data published this week by the PHE showed the AstraZeneca vaccine is 92 percent effective against hospitalization from the Delta variant after two doses, and the Pfizer vaccine is 96 percent effective against hospitalisation after two doses.

Some 33,630 cases of the mutation were recorded in the last week and PHE said "the most recent data show 99% of sequenced and genotyped cases across the country are the Delta variant". Please make sure that you come forward to receive both doses of the vaccine as soon as you are eligible.

That means a total of 124,481 people have had a confirmed diagnosis since the pandemic began.

Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, said it was "encouraging" that hospital admissions and deaths are not rising at the same rate as cases, but experts will "continue to monitor it closely".

"However, it is important that we do not become complacent about this - it is vital to have both doses of the vaccine and to follow the guidance at all times to reduce your chance of any infection", she said.

However, deaths tend to happen some weeks after infections and the majority of cases were confirmed less than 28 days ago. "I think that's certainly what the data continues to indicate".
