Baylor kicker Chris Callahan nailed a 19-yard field goal to give the Bears (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) their first lead of the contest as time expired. But Baylor's offense answered. Getting the football down the field, quickly, and putting it in the end zone right away. But it wasn't just that Iowa State scored, it's that the Cyclones man-handled the Bears for the length of the field on all three drives. That said, Iowa State put up impressive fight for a team that couldn't find its groove during the first four weeks of the season. The only thing that kept the Bears from looking even worse on this was Iowa State's own penalty issues. That challenge was redshirt junior quarterback Joel Lanning.
Running back Mike Warren shouldered a heavy load for the offense as well, reaching 101 yards in the first half and finishing the day with 130 yards on 30 carries. The two are expected to get similar playing time against Baylor. Jacob Park threw for 165 yards and three touchdowns in 15-for-19 passes.
Although the outcome wasn't what the Cyclones were hoping for, there were undoubtedly positives to be had, especially on offense.
Here's how to watch the game. Iowa State had an opportunity to whittle down the clock and march down the field for a game-winning score when it got the ball back with about six minutes remaining in the game, but managed to keep possession for just 1:33 before punting back to the Bears.
Baylor became just the second team in FBS history, along with BYU (1979-81), to lead the nation in scoring three years in a row with 48.1 points per game.
"I don't know what changed or what happened", said coach Matt Campbell. Deshaunte Jones led in receiving with 78 yards and two touchdowns in three receptions while Warren had 68 yards in three catches. Though the Bears won there in 2014, they dropped games in 2009 and 2012. Russell also led Baylor in rushing, posting 10 carries for 65 yards.
Russell engineered a lovely 18-play, 83-yard drive that allowed the Bears to march deep into Iowa State territory, and Linwood's powerful running helped set up the game-winning chip shot. Most of Russell's production - as was the case for the offense as a whole - came on the ground, where he rushed for 88 yards and a pair of scores.
"That's the Shock Linwood everyone told me about", Baylor interim coach Jim Grobe said. Baylor committed 9 penalties for 79 yards and at times bailed out the Cyclones with these mistakes.
Baylor will now get to enjoy a bye week before it hosts the Kansas Jayhawks for a Big 12 showdown on October 15.
