New York Children Die From Mysterious Disease Linked To COVID-19

There is no proof yet that the virus causes the syndrome.

In the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, it appeared that children would be largely unaffected - or at least avoid the worst complications - with the greatest risk being faced by the elderly.

Nationwide, almost 100 children have been diagnosed with the newly identified syndrome, which has been called pediatric multisymptom inflammatory syndrome. "Respiratory symptoms were reported in less than half of these patients".

There have been three deaths statewide linked to the syndrome, Governor Andrew Cuomo had said over the weekend, with one in the city.

New York City's coronavirus death toll neared 20,000 on Saturday as the city reported more than 1,000 new cases.

There have been 73 reported cases in NY where children are experiencing symptoms similar to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock-like syndrome possibly due to Covid-19.

"These children happen to have the COVID antibodies or be positive for COVID", he said.

Dr Dial Hewlett of the Westchester County Department of Health told reporters that in cases where the children are being reported to have the syndrome, someone in the household had previously tested positive for the coronavirus. The syndrome can attack multiple organs, impair heart function and weaken heart arteries.

Doctors say the condition is similar to toxic shock syndrome (TSS) and Kawasaki Disease. It can cause difficulties with the GI tract and kidneys, and there is usually vomiting or diarrhea.

"For now, if the child looks particularly sick, they should go to a pediatric emergency department or activate emergency services", suggests Dr. Slavin. The most severe cases have landed children in the intensive care unit. "I'm very confident that COVID is the trigger for this". The 7-year-old boy died last week at Maria Ferreri Children's Hospital in Valhala. The most affected from infection of the country - USA, Spain, Italy, UK and Russian Federation.

"In Italy, when adult cases started dropping, [the new syndrome in children] began showing up", he said.

Multi-system inflammatory syndrome is a condition caused by inflammatory responses in the body. "There's no way of knowing which kids will get it".

"That poor blessed little soul - that individual did have a significant underlying condition", the health commissioner said. Symptoms could include fever, rash, upset stomach, red lips and pink tongue, city health officials said Sunday.

New York City transit officials said they're providing buses for homeless people to shelter from unseasonably frigid weather this weekend during newly instituted overnight subway closures.

Michael Gewitz, Physician-in-Chief of Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, where the boy passed away, said the child suffered "serious neurological complications" from the pediatric multi-symptom inflammatory syndrome.
