MLS: DC United Coach Confirms Interest In Signing Wayne Rooney

Jose Mourinho paid tribute to Wayne Rooney's career in England as the striker looks set to join MLS side DC United

The England legend is subject to a reported £12 million move to Major League Soccer franchise DC United when the current Premier League campaign ends, but the Toffees boss claims nothing has been finalised in that regard.

Rooney rejoined his boyhood club Everton from Manchester United in July past year.

Rooney, who first burst onto the scene aged just 16 at Everton, is the club's top scorer this season with 11 goals but he has not scored since December.

Reports claim that a deal in principle is in place which will see Rooney move Stateside for a spell with D.C. United this summer.

"Obviously I'd love him to stay, I remember having a conversation with him on the phone, he was one of the main players who got me here, so I am grateful for that, definitely".

Sam Allardyce expects to hold talks with Farhad Moshiri next week, when he will discover whether he is to continue as Everton manager.

Allardyce said on Friday that Rooney has not requested to leave the Merseyside club but he would be "comfortable" if any player wanted to move on.

"It's a tricky question for me to answer", Allardyce said. If he chooses to go then DC will be getting a good player.

"There is an area we need to improve and that is goals".

Allardyce, his own future at Everton shrouded in doubt, said: "My understanding of the situation is there seems to have been some negotiation somewhere along the line but, in terms of clarity as to whether Wayne is leaving or staying I'll find out later today when Wayne comes in for training".

"Lampard, [Patrick] Vieira. now you have Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], you have Wayne, so I hope he enjoys [it]", Mourinho said.

"You would need at least two players to be at the 15 mark and you need the midfielders and wide players to be in the sevens to 10s".
