US sets single-day record for COVID-19 cases during new surge

There have been 575 new cases during the last 14 days in Limerick.

Sixteen U.S. states also hit one-day records for new infections of the virus that causes COVID-19 on Friday, including five considered key in the November 3 presidential election: Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Over the past 14 days, Wyoming has averaged 161 lab-confirmed cases per day. The state received the results of 83,517 COVID-19 tests in the 24 hours leading up to Saturday afternoon.

Elsewhere in the country today, there were 192 cases in Dublin, 148 in Cork, 58 in Donegal, 55 in Galway, 54 in Meath, with 352 cases spread across 21 remaining counties.

Of the cases notified today: 508 are men / 506 are women; 71% are under 45 years of age.

As of 2 p.m. today, 315 COVID-19 patients will be admitted to the hospital, 37 of them in the intensive care unit.

The median age of today's cases is 31 years old.

The standing total of Covid-19 cases in Ireland since the first outbreak of the virus is 57,128, and 1,882 deaths have been recorded.

"Everyone else should stay at home, unless for essential reasons or for exercise within 5 kilometres of where you live".

There are now more than 2.3 million users on the Ministry of Health's Covid-19 tracing app having recorded over 98 million scans of QR check-in codes.

It brings the total number of cases diagnosed in the six counties to 34,105 while the death toll there now stands at 653.

OH had its fourth straight record-setting day Saturday, reporting its highest number of coronavirus cases in a 24-hour span (2,858).
