'Mank' leads Golden Globe nominees with 6; Netflix dominates
Feb 04 2021
Trophies are set by the stage ahead of the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awardsnominations announcement, at the Beverly Hilton hotel, in Beverly Hills, Calif., on December 9.
Three women have been nominated for best director at this year's Golden Globe awards - the first time more than one has been shortlisted in a year. Baron Cohen's "Borat" sequel - one of the few nominees partially shot during the pandemic - was nominated for best picture, comedy or musical, best actor in a comedy for Baron Cohen and best supporting actress for Maria Bakalova.
The contest for the best drama movie will also include modern Great Recession story "Nomadland", 1960s Vietnam War protest drama "The Trial of the Chicago 7", #MeToo revenge story "Promising Young Woman and ageing family drama "The Father". Due to HFPA's rules that fails to recognize the true diversity of the American experience, acclaimed Asian American stories such as Lulu Wang's "The Farewell" (2019) and Lee Isaac Chung's "Minari" have been forced to compete at the Globes as foreign-language films instead of in the marquee drama and comedy/musical film categories.
The Queen's Gambit on Netflix, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a gifted chess player who fights drug and alcohol addiction, will compete in the limited series category against HBO's The Undoing, Netflix's Unorthodox and others.
Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) will go up against James Corden (The Prom) in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy while Viola Davis (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom), Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) will vie for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama.
This year's Globes were postponed almost two months because of the pandemic and to adjust to the delayed Oscars.
Variety reports that hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (returning to host the ceremony for the first time since 2015) will be hosting the 2021 Golden Globe Awards from two separate coasts, Fey broadcasting live from the Rainbow Room at the top of Rockefeller Center in New York City, Poehler hosting from the Globes' usual location inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Nominees will likely appear from places around the world. We've known for a few months that Guatemala planned to submit the film as its entry for Best International Film at the Oscars this year, and now that level of attention and the huge critical acclaimed heaped on the film have landed it a Globes nod.
