Luke Witkowski fractured Anthony Mantha's finger; now he's a Red Wing

Lackluster defense might have topped the list.

The defenseman has reportedly signed a three-year, $9.5 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings. "We felt we had to do something".

A native of New Westminster, British Columbia, Elson also saw time with the Alaska Aces in the ECHL during the 2013-14 campaign, picking up 15 points (5-10-15) in 18 regular-season games and 11 points (7-4-11) in 21 postseason games to help Alaska capture the ECHL's Kelly Cup as league champions.

The 33-year-old Daley has 78 goals and 278 points in his 13-year career, spending much of it with the Dallas Stars before playing for Chicago and Pittsburgh the past two seasons. That's still an average defensive unit, but it's definitely better than past year. He said having the Red Wings reach out to him, expressing he was a priority, and hearing their plans to get back into the playoffs sold him on moving to the Motor City.

Witkowski, 27, signed for one year at $750,000.

Witkowski played for Wings head coach Jeff Blashill while at Western Michigan University.

"We know that we're adding two real character people to our line up, two real good pros and two guys that are going to be great additions not only on the ice but off the ice in the locker room", GM Ken Holland said.

Red Wings fans will remember Witkowski as the player who ended forward Anthony Mantha's season during a March 30 fight.

"It's not only fighting, " Holland said.

It's expected Daley will play on a pairing with Dan DeKeyser next season, with Niklas Kronwall and Mike Green making up the other top-four duo.
