Kamaru Usman beats America’s Masvidal to ‘submission’ - and retains title
Jul 14 2020
Usman defended his title against Masvidal in the UFC 251 main event Saturday night in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. "I said no-one can outdo me in there", the featherweight champion said.
"Gamebred (Masvidal) is the biggest, baddest dude out there right now, so I had to switch gears preparing for him on six days' notice". I had to make a mental shift. He was a makeshift replacement for #1 contender Gilbert Burns, who had tested positive for coronavirus.
Usman was unanimously adjudged the victor by 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46 to retain his crown.
Some fans might have booed Usman's strategy, but there were no fans inside the temporary arena.
Even the MMA promotion's president Dana White spoke about the poor judging standards at UFC 251 to the media after the event. The two judges that scored his title fight 48-47 to Alexander Volkanovski were in the minority, but it was enough to hand Holloway his second consecutive loss to the Australian. "He stood there and he didn't really take a backward step,"' Volkanovski said. I couldn't use the kicks as much as I liked. But I don't know who it's going to be. It's tough. He's a gamer.
"We both feel that we'll do it again", Usman continued.
It would appear that if anyone is next for Volkanovski, it is Zombie who has won three of his last four outings all by way of knockout. Meanwhile, Petr Yan finished off veteran Jose Aldo in the fifth and final round to win the bantamweight title belt.
Yan weathered an inspired start by Aldo, and eventually established his dominance with superior striking.
"I expected it to be a hard fight", Yan said through an interpreter. Andrade rallied in the third and badly damaged Namajunas' nose and left eye, but Namajunas won 29-28 on two judges' scorecards.
'I'm just levels better. "That's everything. Early on in the fight, I was doing great".
"He made it tough for me in the early rounds. She caught me a couple of times, but I just stayed strong".
