Juneteenth Now a Holiday at Beauty Companies, Too

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam also intends to introduce legislation making Juneteenth a permanent statewide holiday, and intends to give state workers a day off this Friday.

"They're required viewing. We actually sent a link around to the Juneteenth episode to everyone at ABC Entertainment in advance of Friday's holiday".

Forty-three other states and the District of Columbia recognize the day, but not as a state holiday.

Juneteenth is short for June Nineteenth, and marks the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure all enslaved people be freed.

Up until the Civil War ended in April of 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was made law, slaves were still being held captive in Texas, which was isolated from much of the war. At NACS, employees have the option of taking paid time off as a day of reflection in observance of Juneteenth.

The holiday spread throughout the country as Black people moved north during the Great Migration, but emancipation was celebrated on other dates in some places, including MI. "We recognize that the racial trauma the country is experiencing now is not new, but throughout recent weeks there has been a sense that this time is, and has to be, different", said Brian Cornell, Target's chairman/CEO. Almost a century later, Black people remained enslaved throughout the country. The Emancipation Proclamation had been signed two years earlier, but news traveled slowly and was withheld from slaves. But in the wake of protests of Floyd's killing this year and against a backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic that has disproportionately harmed Black communities, more Americans - especially white Americans - are becoming familiar with the holiday and commemorating it.

Like Juneteenth, the 30th of May was a daylong celebration of fun, barbecue, snow cones and hot dogs. "We know Juneteenth this year will be like none other", DeBardelaben said. "I started wondering, is this another example of how a national holiday is formed?"

In 1980, Texas became the first state to officialize Juneteenth as a state holiday.
