CCSO officials announced late Tuesday afternoon that one of the subjects involved in the attempted burglary at an Elderwood Drive home died at Trident Hospital.
Police say a 13-year-old boy was home alone in Charleston County, South Carolina, when he went to grab his mother's gun after he heard two alleged burglars try to break in from the back.
Police said they "recovered a gun from the backyard of the home", which is believed to be the gun the suspect used to shoot at the boy.
One of the suspects fired back at the boy, but he wasn't hit.
The boy's mother said that the entire family was shaken up after the incident, noting that they had just moved into the house in May and that they had not seen any crime in the neighborhood before now.
'I never would have dreamed that this would have been a part of our day today'.
'I tell my kids that if anything ever happens to call 911, but I also tell them to protect themselves if they have to.
According to the mother, the family moved into the home this past May. Witnesses also positively identified the man as the driver of the vehicle, according to the affidavit. Both men have extensive criminal histories, including assault with intent to kill, third-degree burglary, and manufacturing and distributing a controlled substance.
