Harry Potter RPG to Launch Late in 2021 on Next-Gen Hardware

A Harry Potter game has always been rumored to be in development at Avalanche Software, one of many studios under the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment purchased and revived in 2017 after its closure in 2016. The game will launch "late next year" and is coming to "platforms including the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X".

Bloomberg have now confirmed that the footage (now deleted) was real and was from an early build of a massive open world game that is currently in production at Avalanche Software.

The big-budget Harry Potter game will let players role-play as wizards and roam a "vast, open-world re-creation of Hogwarts and its surrounding areas".

As Bloomberg's Jason Schreier put it, Rowling "continues to play a role in most projects associated with the Harry Potter brand, and the game is no exception". The report touches upon how that's been perceived by staff at developer Avalanche Software.

The game's reveal was supposedly going to happen during E3 which was cancelled, making it yet another game whose unveiling was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now the official announcement will reportedly take place sometime after DC FanDome in August.

Felicia Grady, managing editor of the popular Harry Potter fan site MuggleNet, said the Rowling controversy is likely to summon a shroud of Dementor-like negativity around the game. J.K. Rowling has reportedly had very little direct involvement with the game, which may be fortunate considering the author has been criticized for recent transphobic comments.

Footage from a very early version of the now untitled game began circulating back in 2018.
