France, UK regulators approve Moderna vaccine in race against Covid-19

Israel's health ministry authorizes use of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine

COVID-19 vaccine scams are on the rise, according to European and US government officials who are warning the public of fraudsters out for money and personal data.

Minster for Health Stephen Donnelly said on Wednesday that Ireland has ordered 875,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine and that "the logistics are being finalised".

A Reuters search online, in dark web forums and on messaging app Telegram found seven different offers for alleged COVID-19 vaccines.

In trials with more than 30,000, the Moderna vaccine offered almost 95% protection from severe Covid.

People who have received a coronavirus vaccine should continue to follow social distancing rules to protect themselves and others.

The decision clears the way for a second vaccine option after the Pfizer-BioNTech jab in an inoculation campaign that has been assailed by critics as lagging far behind those of its neighbours.

His top health officials are considering advising that some Americans only take one dose of Moderna's vaccine instead of the recommended two in the hopes of increasing the distribution totals.

Romualdez said the private sector, led by Enrique Razon, chairman and president of the International Container Terminal Services, has pledged free shipping of the Moderna vaccines from the manufacturing facility in Spain.

"Once endorsed by the EC, the label would state that after dilution, vials of Comirnaty contain six doses of 0.3 ml of vaccine", Pfizer said in a statement. Authorities started vaccinations on December 19 using the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.

Early results of large, still unfinished studies show both the Moderna and the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines appear safe and strongly protective, although Moderna's is easier to handle since it doesn't need to be stored at ultra-frozen temperatures. It said side effects "were usually mild or moderate and got better within a few days after vaccination".

The vaccine is 94% effective in preventing disease, including in the elderly.

Despite the increased output, the US remains well behind the goals set by Operation Warp Speed - the joint effort from the Department of Defense and the Department of Health and Human Services, which is tasked with distributing the vaccines.
