In a statement, UCT management says the fire has reached the upper campus and that it is not safe for anyone to be in buildings or surrounding areas.

The fire partially destroyed the University of Cape Town's Jagger Library and the historic Mostert's Mill. Windy conditions, a regular weather feature on the Cape Peninsula, caused the fire to spread and cross the M3 highway, which connects downtown Cape Town to the southern suburbs.
City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said fire crews were alerted at 08:45 to a vegetation fire above Philip Kgosana Drive.

Fire-fighting teams teams from Working on Fire and Table Mountain National Park were deployed to fight the blaze. More resources are now on their way to assist firefighting efforts.
More than 100 firefighters were sent to battle the blaze and two were hospitalised for treatment after sustaining burns, officials said.
Four helicopters are also water bombing.
The Rhodes Memorial restaurant has been damaged, and people have been advised to evacuate the area.
