Fadnavis is Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly
Dec 02 2019
Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and some ministers greeted Fadnavis, former chief minister, after Patole made the announcement.
A few hours later, Devendra Fadnavis also resigned as Pawar's resignation, deprived his government of a majority.
Fadnavis quoted a famous couplet and said: "Thinking the tide has ebbed, don't you dare build your house on the coast, for I am the sea, and I will come back". I am here with my luck and blessings of people.
The BJP members also created a ruckus before the walkout, when as Uddhav Thackeray introduced himself and his six-member cabinet to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Saturday afternoon.
"Those who were in the Opposition for several years are now with me to form the government whereas friends (BJP) have gone away to sit on Opposition benches in this House", he said.
"I will not hesitate to admit that we have been good friends for a long time. But, if we had been together, then I would have been watching today's proceedings live on television at home!" The four-page document bears the signatures of Thackeray, NCP's Jayant Patil and Congress's Balasaheb Thorat.
"But he (Mr. Fadnavis) himself became the Opposition leader", the Rajya Sabha member said.
"Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari once told me he would not do anything beyond the Constitution's framework".
Ahead of the trust vote, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut expressed confidence of the alliance winning the floor test.
Thackeray was speaking after Fadnavis, leader of state BJP legislature unit, was named the new Leader of Opposition in the House by Speaker Nana Patole. "I am happy that the son of a farmer has occupied this post", Uddhav said.
"I won't call you (Devendra Fadnavis) an "Opposition leader", but I will call you a "responsible leader". So, your appointment as Leader of the Opposition is quite apt".
Uddhav congratulated Fadnavis on his election and said he had learnt a lot from his predecessor.
Meanwhile, party sources said the deputy chief minister's post could go to Ajit Pawar.
"Fadnavis ji, we were friends once and shall always remain so". I am still with the ideology of Hindutva and won't ever leave it. "I have never told anyone that I will be coming here but I came", he said.
