Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang vowed to become an Arsenal "legend" as the Gunners captain ended speculation over his future by signing a new three-year contract on Tuesday.
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta picked a non surprising lineup as he didn't have many options but he however left out several players as the Premier League chose to end the five substitute rule introduced at end of last season.
Aubameyang joined Arsenal in January 2018 from Borussia Dortmund, and he has since scored 55 goals for the club in 86 competitive appearances.
"Signing for this special club was never in doubt", he said. "It's thanks to our fans, my team-mates, my family and everybody at this club that I feel like I belong here". "Can I just say, because there's so many people [watching] and I'm sure there's lots of people requesting you, man, but let me just say: For you to sign for us in a time when we need you most, when we've seen legends leave us when we need them, you are legendary status".
"He's an important leader for the team and a big part of what we're building".
"My dad is my biggest inspiration and he was captain of his club and his country, so it means so much to me to be the captain of this special club". He wants to be up there with the best players in the world and leave his mark. I want to leave a legacy, this is where I belong. "He can achieve that here".
The PA news agency understands there is interest from a number of Italian clubs in securing the services of Uruguay global midfielder Lucas Torreira, with Torino believed to be winning the race for his signature.
Bernd Leno is the first-choice goalkeeper at Arsenal at the moment, and despite playing well in the German's absence in the final weeks of last season, Martinez could not make himself the number one player between the posts for the North London club.
However, with Matt Macey also being linked with a move away from the Emirates, there is a chance Arsenal are bringing in Runarsson as a third-choice goalkeeper and are still on the hunt for a Martinez replacement.
