A series of tornadoes formed in Central and Western Illinois Saturday evening as a storm system was greeted by unseasonably warm temperatures.

The central IL town of Taylorville, located southeast of Springfield in Christian County, was the community hardest hit by Saturday's tornadoes.

Hardest hit was the town of Taylorviille, southeast of Springfield, where storm winds wrecked houses, downed power lines, pulled trees up by the roots, and left an unknown number of people injured.

Authorities say at least 20 people were injured and dozens of homes were damaged.

"It's a miracle no one was killed in the tragedy of these tornadoes", said Gov. Bruce Rauner, who toured the area on Sunday.

"It's a miracle that no one has been killed in this tragedy, in these tornadoes", Bruce Rauner, Governor of IL, told CNN. The town received a 41-minute advance warning from the National Weather Service.

The state averages a little over 60 per year, but from 1950 through 2017, only 57 tornadoes had occurred in December, which makes this outbreak rare.

In Butler, south of Springfield, Hannah Fogle tweeted two videos of a funnel cloud.

It remains unclear how many tornadoes blew through the region, but it won't be as many as 22, Miller said. She said a tornado mainly went through the countryside, but "I know of one house that had major damage".

The National Weather Service says a rare wintertime tornado that struck Taylorville in central IL was half-a-mile-wide and stayed on the ground for at least 10 miles (16 kilometers).

More than 2,000 people remained without power in Taylorville, according to IL electric and gas delivery company Ameren and CTI Fiber Network. There was some damage to a pier, power poles were knocked down and at least one truck flipped over.
