Diaz, Tate stun fancied foes in UFC

Tate, 29, has now won five in a row.

"I respect Nate. He came in and took the fight on short notice at 170 and did the job". "Notorious" only two losses came via submission early in his career. Twice she threatened to finish with a rear-naked choke, only to have Holm barely fight her off. McGregor hit him with the hardest punches he had and Diaz was never rocked or hurt.

Diaz, who took the fight less than two weeks ago, abruptly changed the bout with an electric series of punches that wobbled the previously unshakable McGregor.

It took just two rounds for Diaz to get the Irishman where he wanted him - on the ground. Diaz also is very slick on the ground with his jiu-jitsu, but doesn't tend to look for takedowns.

The co-main event is a Women's Bantamweight Championship, champion Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm is unbeaten in MMA, and is coming off her biggest victory and one of the greatest upsets in combative sports history after dismantling and knocking out the previously unbeaten women's champion Ronda Rousey.

Holm was choked out by Tate in the fifth and final round of their Las Vegas title fight, ending the American's reign in her first defence. "She's capable of catching anyone at anytime", Tate said. She squeezed with all her might and Holm went out at 3:30, making Tate the new champion. It was not only a big upset, it was an upset of Mixed Martial Arts' biggest star, and it begs the question, where do we go from here?

Before the Diaz fight, McGregor predicted exactly how he'd beat his rival.

As for McGregor, he is still the undisputed featherweight champion, but his question to hold multiple belts simultaneously may have to be put on ice. I've always enjoyed Nick (Diaz) and Nate and their fighting approach, and even the build-up, I had a lot of fun listening to the things he was saying. Usually I fight a man in the division I'm champion in, and they crumble under those shots (I landed).

Diaz persevered and hung tough to snatch the win. He was efficient, I wasn't efficient. I will take it on the chin. "It didn't work out". "I will wait patiently for the lightweight belt to be contested". He fought very well.

In the last round, Tate started out aggressively, attempting to take Holm down again and again.

"It wasn't the right move to shake her off my back", Holm said. "Like I said from the beginning, I have the best training partners in the world in every aspect", Diaz said at Saturday's post-fight press conference.

Tate was overwhelmed after finally reaching her longtime goal. She said late previous year she wasn't sure if she would continue to fight, after the UFC skipped over a promised title shot in order to book a fight between Holm and Rousey.

"I felt like I was superior boxer", Diaz said. "I knew she wasn't getting out of that one".
