Could the next Doctor Who be transgender?

The Time Lord, 57, skirted around questions about his future on the show at the Radio Times Festival in London at the weekend, but is expected to be back again in 2016.

He added that executive producer Steven Moffat would not be able to commit to more episodes, saying it would compromise his vision.

"You want people running on all cylinders". Not going to happen, according to Capaldi.

He may only have been playing the Time Lord officially since 2013, but Peter Capaldi says he's been preparing for the role his entire life - and he's not alone...

In tonight's episode of Doctor Who, The Witch's Familiar, we saw the Doctor defeat the Daleks and Davros with the help of his all-new Sonic Sunglasses, which seem to have replaced the classic Sonic Screwdriver. That quality is what Whovians have come to expect from the show.

But if she ever took over from Capaldi, just what kind of Doctor would she be: "I like vintage stuff, I like quirky things and I think the whole wardrobe thing looks such fun doesn't it?"

"I would always be happy (to return) if there was a good story", Coleman told Entertainment Weekly.

Doctor Who airs its next episode, "Under The Lake", on Saturday (October 3) at 8.25pm on BBC One.
