Ten of the most recent cases have reported no known contact with someone positive for COVID-19.

One variant, which was first identified in the United Kingdom, is particularly concerning.

Simon said people should not look at those numbers and assume there are 400,000 unused doses in the county, noting again the lag in vaccination reports and the daily administration of doses. But while that number is down, health care workers and ICU capacity remain overwhelmed, with the Southern California Region continuing to have 0% available ICU space and remaining under the Regional Stay at Home Order. "But we need to expand greatly our genomic surveillance".

Miriam Palomino, right, received the COVID-19 vaccine in Paterson, N.J., Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021.

Fauci said if Johnson & Johnson's vaccine is authorized for emergency use, the United States could see a significant boost in available doses by May. "Once they get going into May, June, July, August, then you're going to see a sharp escalation of additional doses of this one-dose vaccine". 11 Douglas County COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, 9 locally and 2 outside the area.

Through today, 525 have died from COVID-19 related illness in the county. Of the new cases, 10 were from the southeast quadrant; six were from the southwest quadrant; four were from the northeast quadrant and three from the northwest quadrant. December and January have only gotten worse, with the US repeatedly breaking its record for most new cases in a single day.

"It is critically important we slow COVID-19 spread to decompress the strain on our healthcare system and save lives".

He said if the county can get its allocation increased to 500,000 per week, "we would have the potential to reach 75% of the adult population in the county, or 6 million adults, by mid-summer".
