NY has recorded by far the most deaths of any USA state at more than 32,000 with California in fourth place with over 8,000 deaths.

However, with 32,526 confirmed deaths, NY still has the highest number of total deaths in the country and four times more than California's reported 7,890 fatalities.

The most populous U.S. state recorded 413,579 cases on Wednesday after adding a record 12,807 spike in new daily infections to its tally. In California there is an average of 8,300 new cases a day.

And New York's rate of confirmed infections of about 2,100 per 100,000 people is twice that of California's rate.

The rapid increase of cases has made it hard to trace the pathogen's path through the community through contact tracing, a process of interviewing people who test positive for the virus to find out how they were exposed, and whom they in turn might have exposed, said California Secretary of Health and Human Services Mark Ghaly.

Meanwhile, New York's 32,520 deaths are still by far the highest total in the country and four times more than California's tally of 7,870.

The rapid increase of cases has made it hard to trace the pathogen's path through the community through contact tracing, a process of interviewing people who test positive for the virus to find out how they were exposed, and whom they in turn might have exposed, California Secretary of Health and Human Services Dr Mark Ghaly said on Tuesday.

But infections began to surge and a new round of business restrictions were imposed, including a ban on indoor dining in restaurants and bars.

California on Tuesday became the second USA state after NY to report more than 400,000 COVID-19 cases, according to a Reuters tally of county data.

Los Angeles County, the nation's most populous with 10 million residents, reported that younger people were driving the spread of new infections.

President Donald Trump has said this week that the pandemic in the United States will probably get worse before it gets better. The total number of COVID-19 cases stands at 379,619 and the state reports 5,345 deaths.

USA government data shows reported coronavirus cases underestimate the true number of infections.

It is based on COVID-19 antibody tests performed on routine blood samples in 16,000 people in 10 United States regions.

This statement rings true in many states.
