Casting around for the kinds of brooding, sallow faces that would really pop in the harsh light of a 19th century electrical generator, The Weinstein Company is in talks to recruit Jake Gyllenhaal and Benedict Cumberbatch as the leads in its upcoming film The Current War.

The movie 'takes place in the late-1880s and revolves around power titans Edison and Westinghouse's battle over the supply of electricity. The script, by scribe Michael Mitnick, first showed up on the 2011 Black List as one of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood.

Timur Bekmambetov, who was originally eyed to direct the movie, will produce alongside Film Rites' Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch.

Cumberbatch is a busy fellow these days. Cumberbatch presently stars in Lyndsey Turner's production of Hamlet in London's West End.

It's obviously far too early to say whether or not this might be an Oscar contender, but with those two actors involved and the up and coming Gomez-Rejon at the helm, The Current War certainly has a lot of potential.

The guy can even be seen in theaters now, playing the long-haired, cocky Scott Fischer in Everest. He also just debuted his new film, the drama/comedy DEMOLITION, at this month's Toronto internationalFilm Festival to great critical acclaim, and he's attached to the fact-based crime drama THE MAN WHO MADE IT SNOW for director Antoine Fuqua.
