Pompeo, during his two-day visit to Israel, is also expected to make the first visit by a senior USA official to a settlement in the occupied West Bank.

Last year, Trump's administration made the controversial decision to recognise Israeli sovereignty in the Golan - a move Pompeo on Thursday called "historically important and simply a recognition of the reality".

Pompeo has so far backed Trump in refusing to concede defeat to President-elect Joe Biden and it remains unclear how the Biden administration will manage the current U.S. relationship with Israel or if he will work to reverse some of its policies.

"Pompeo is intoxicated by apartheid wine stolen from Palestinian land".

Supporters of the BDS campaign strongly deny the charge of anti-Semitism, and insist that they work to peacefully oppose Israel's policies towards Palestinians.

In recent years, tackling the BDS movement has become a major priority for Israel, which set up a special ministry for strategic affairs that combats "de-legitimisation" of the Jewish state.

The senators said Trump should continue to support Israel with the policy change.

The secretary of state later Thursday also became the first U.S. top diplomat to visit a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, where a vineyard has named one of its wines after him.

Pompeo met with Netanyahu and then travelled to the West Bank to visit a settler winery, which has a blend named after him.

Israeli planning and building of settlements in the Palestinian territories has boomed under successive Netanyahu governments and especially since Trump took office in 2017.

Pompeo's visit departed from past policy that had kept top US officials away from settlements, which Palestinians view as obstacles to a viable future state.

Pompeo toured parts of the disputed territory on Israel's border with Syria under heavy security with Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi.

Bahrain and its Gulf neighbour the United Arab Emirates both signed US-sponsored normalisation accords with Israel at the White House on September 15, pacts that were condemned as a "betrayal" by the Palestinians and their allies.

"To achieve and consolidate such a peace, the Palestinian and Israeli conflict needs to be resolved", the minister said.

"It's quite ironic, really, that such a xenophobic, racist United States administration that is a partner in Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people, and that is empowering white supremacists and anti-Semites ... would dare to smear a human rights movement led by Palestinians calling for justice for the entire Palestinian people", said BDS co-founder Omar Barghouti during an interview with Al Jazeera.

Bahrain's foreign minister arrived in Israel Wednesday on the first official visit from the Gulf kingdom, which normalised relations with the Jewish state in September.

Pompeo warned the Islamic republic in comments Wednesday that the deals the UAE and Bahrain have reached with Israel showed "its influence in the region is waning".
