Avengers & Game of Thrones Legend Diana Rigg Dies at Age 82

Diana Rigg

"It is with tremendous sadness that we announce that Dame Diana Rigg died peacefully early this morning", reads the statement "She died peacefully early this morning".

Dame Diana Rigg, the veteran actress famous for playing Olenna Tyrell in the HBO series Game of Thrones among dozens of other movie and television roles, has sadly passed away. Rigg died September 10 in her home in London. Succeeding Julie Stevens and Honor Blackman as Steed's sidekick, Emma Peel became an instant sex symbol in the 60's. She appeared as Countess Tracy di Vicenzo in George Lazenby's 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the only woman to ever marry 007.

To look at actress Dame Diana Rigg's filmography is to look back at a lifetime of performances defined by a person's singular panache and talent for slipping so deeply into a wide bevvy of roles, that each time she stepped onto screen, you could scarcely believe that the same person had inhabited so many different roles.

In the 21st-century, she was best known for playing Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones.

Rigg is survived by a daughter she had with her ex-husband, theatre producer Archibald Stirling, actress Rachael Stirling. She said in an interview of the time after Tipping the Velvet, "I got offered lots of parts that were like 'She reveals herself after five minutes.' So I turned them down and I wasn't doing very much".

The award-winning actress was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. Oscar victor Viola Davis also offered a short and honest statement: "RIP Diana Rigg".

Eight years later, Rigg and her family returned to England, where she attended boarding school and later trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her performance won her fans who did not know the old Diana, the one who had married James Bond and played the catsuit-clad lithe spy in The Avengers.

Additionally, Mark Gatiss, another co-star from GOT who played the role Tycho Nestoris, tweeted a long and touching message on Diana and his experience working with her in "All About Mother". The character went down in GoT history after she admitted to poisoning disgusting King Joffrey just before being killed herself. "Her dazzling wit and that inimitable voice made her an unforgettable leading figure in British theatre". Beyond Bond, her film roles included A Midsummer Night's Dream (1968), Theatre of Blood (1973), The Great Muppet Caper (1981), and Evil Under the Sun (1982).
