Arsenal accept bid for Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa

But it seems that they have come back with a bid close to Arsenal's £20 million valuation for the player.

According to The Independent, Villa are set to make an improvement on their initial offer of £15million for Martinez.

The Athletic reported recently that Arsenal were keen on signing the 24-year-old after he was recommended to Arteta by goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana Pavon - who worked with Raya during their time together at Brentford.

Villa meet Manchester United at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon in the final pre-season friendly match, while the Premier League season begins elsewhere.

Arsenal's head coach Mikel Arteta made several attempts to persuade Martinez to stay, however, he never offered the keeper any assurances of being the club's No 1.

The 27-year-old wants first-team football, but knows he is unlikely to unseat Bernd Leno in goal at the Emirates.

He told Argentine radio station Continental last month: "I have shown the club that I can play for them and when I return next season, I need to have more games".

He filled in between the sticks after Leno, 28, suffered an injury in June.

"I won't stop until I get that and if I don't play for Arsenal, then clearly, I would move on".

Villarreal have also been linked with Martinez as Unai Emery wants to reunite with him.

Martinez was left out of Arsenal's squad for their 3-0 victory against Fulham on the opening day of the Premier League season.
