Antivirus software creator John McAfee found dead in Spanish prison

McAfee founder found dead by suicide in Spanish jail: prison official

USA technology entrepreneur John McAfee hanged himself in his prison cell on Wednesday after the Spanish high court authorized his extradition to the United States on tax evasion charges, his lawyer told Reuters.

Spain's high court agreed to extradite McAfee to the United States, a court document released on Wednesday said. He was seventy five years old and was arrested at El Prat Airport in Barcelona October last year.

Reuters confirmed McAfee's death with the Catalan justice department, which confirmed an earlier report from Spain's El Mundo newspaper. The reports indicate that authorities believe he committed suicide, but the cause of death has not been officially determined.

The decision can be appealed and the final extradition will need to be approved by the Spanish Cabinet.

In a hearing earlier this month via videolink, McAfee claimed the charges were politically motivated and said he feared he would spend the rest of his life in prison if he was taken back to the US.

US federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment in October against McAfee over charges that he evaded taxes and wilfully failed to file returns.

He allegedly failed to file taxes for four years despite earning millions in income between 2014 and 2018 from promoting cryptocurrencies, consulting work, speaking engagements, and selling the rights to his life story for a documentary, according to court documents.

The news was also shared by Reuters Legal on Twitter. His company was responsible for one of the most well known antivirus software programs at the time.

The US Justice Department alleged that Mr McAfee evaded tax liability by having his income paid into bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchange accounts in the names of nominees.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that a Spanish court had ruled in favor of his extradition to the us just hours before he was found dead. "I have nothing. Yet, I regret nothing".
