Your Guide to South Korea (And the Olympics!): Travelogue Podcast

Kim Yo Jong flew into the South on her brother's private jet on Friday before she and other North Korean officials attended the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in the alpine resort town of Pyeongchang.

There was South Korean President Moon Jae-in happily shaking hands with Kim Yo-jong, the first member of the North Korean Kim family's inner circle to step on South Korean soil.

South and North Korea last marched together at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

It was evident from the multiple pictures emerging from the event that Pence indeed made no discernible effort to acknowledge or engage with the North Korean delegation. In a strong statement on the eve of the Olympics, the Court of Arbitration for Sport kept the delegation at 168 athletes, denying an appeal by several others to be allowed to compete in Pyeongchang.

Pence, who is leading the U.S. delegation to the Olympics, briefly encountered Kim Yong-nam at the Games but the two tried to avoid directly facing each other.

Saturday's meeting also involved the North's ceremonial head of state, Kim Yong-nam, who led what apparently turned out to be a 21-member delegation to the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Olympics on Friday. Mr. Moon and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe both shook hands with Mr. Kim.

Seoul also announced that it would begin direct talks with Pyongyang.

The announcement - following months of cajoling by Seoul - is seen as a bid to defuse tensions and seek a loosening of the sanctions against it. But this government is stopping us from using our own flag ...

Officials traveling with Pence said it would be fair to characterize his failure to interact with the North Koreans as a mutual decision, with neither side making any public overtures. Thirty years after hosting the Summer Games, the Pyeongchang Olympics has commenced with a hope for peace from everyone around the world.

He added that U.S. and allied military exercises will be delayed until after the end of the Winter Olympics on February 25.
