WSDOT: 1 lane of United States 2 near Stevens Pass now open
Nov 23 2015
"A contractor will begin working tomorrow to reopen at least one lane of traffic before the Thanksgiving holiday".
Officials say engineers have found ways expedite the fix process.
Heavy rain and mudslides from Tuesday's storm have shut down both directions of USA 2 between Skykomish and the Summit at Stevens Pass. Traffic was light after the road reopened at about 10 a.m. Sunday, said state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Harmony Weinberg. Were moving again, and that was our goal, she said. Signal timing will be set up to accommodate peak traffic. Local residents will be able to access properties east of the closure point in Skykomish, but will not be allowed to cross the bridge. There is now no detour. "To keep drivers safe, we have closed the bridge to all but emergency vehicles". Oversized loads will not be allowed to cross the bridge.
Only a single lane over a bridge damaged in the storm is open with traffic alternating between eastbound and westbound.
Massive amounts of soil were carried away by the surge of flood waters under the bridge, and officials say it will cost up to $500,000 in fix work to get it fixed. WSDOT is seeking emergency relief funds from the Federal Highway Administration to complete the repairs.
