'We will miss you': India mourns Sushma Swaraj's death

Just hours before her death veteran BJP leader and former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj had tweeted thanking Prime Minister Modi after Parliament scrapped Article 370 which provided for special status of Jammu and Kashmir

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders on Tuesday condoled the death of former Union minister Sushma Swaraj, with party president Amit Shah saying that she left an indelible mark in the national politics. India has lost a great soul and a leader.

A year ago on August 16, Former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had died at a hospital in New Delhi where he had been undergoing treatment for a kidney ailment since June. Hours before she died, she had congratulated PM Modi on the passing of the bill abrogating Article 370 on Jammu and Kashmir in the Lok Sabha. "I offer my heartfelt tributes to her and extend my condolences to her bereaved family", Singh said in another tweet.

Senior party leader Arun Jaitley said he was pained and broken at her demise and described her as one of the most outstanding politicians in the present era. She played a key role in bettering India's ties with various nations.

She was brought to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi at around 9 pm after complaining of anxiety. "Om Shanti", he said. "She was uncompromising when it came to matters of ideology and interests of the BJP, whose growth she immensely contributed to", he wrote.

During her tenure, the BJP leader had been active and popular on Twitter reaching out to the Indian diaspora in distress for assistance.

The Congress condoled her death and tweeted, "We are saddened to hear about the untimely demise of Smt Sushma Swaraj. Our condolences to her family and loved ones", the party's official Twitter account said.

"We used to address her as "didi" and the respect she commanded was phenomenal".
