Vaughn Taylor hoping move to March sparks previous success at Players Championship

Tommy Fleetwood passed the "ultimate test in golf" with flying colours on the opening day of the Players Championship as he looks to keep pace with Ryder Cup partner Francesco Molinari.

This has led to a couple of two-stroke penalties, and also one situation in which a player had a penalty rescinded after officials acknowledged the new rule was causing confusion.

Every year 100,000 balls are retrieved from the waters around the 17th hole at the TPC Sawgrass but on Thursday fans watched a golfer pull one out of the hole for just the ninth time after Ryan Moore struck a hole-in-one at the Players Championship.

Among the favourites are American Dustin Johnson, ranked number one in the world, coming off a win at the WGC-Mexico Championship, and the 6th-ranked Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland. "It's not brutally hard, but if the wind blows, it's going to play tough".

Woods, who played nine holes on Tuesday and nine holes on Wednesday, had one of those moments that Scott described.

Fleetwood, who played the back nine first, did not take advantage of still conditions early, instead making his move after the wind started to make its presence felt. I feel like good shots weren't always rewarded, just with the way the course was playing.

"If you hit it well like I did today you're going to have chances and you can shoot a score".

He believes a maiden PGA Tour win is within his grasp.

Tiger Woods was equal 35th after an entertaining 70 that included six birdies and four bogeys.

"Expectation's a tricky thing. I think we all have to accept that you're going to hit good shots, and going to get some weird hopes, and get some really, really funky lies whether it's off the fairway or around the greens".

Bradley sounded nearly serene after his 65.

Ryan Moore just nailed one of the most spectacular shots of the year.

"I don't normally feel as comfortable as I did today". However, I think I've nearly secured my card for next season, so it releases some stress a little bit and this will allow me to play my own game.

His 74 included a triple-bogey at his 10th hole, the par-four first, where he took five shots to hole out from a greenside bunker.

It is one of the most famous holes in golf because of an "island green" - actually a peninsula - that is surrounded by unforgiving water.
