Utes release graduation rates for student-athletes
Nov 10 2017
Auburn Athletics posted its highest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in program history with an 82 percent.
Penn State student-athletes achieved a record-tying academic performance as the student-athletes continue to graduate at rates higher than most schools around the country.
GSR measures the success of an athletics department in graduating its student-athletes within a six-year period. For the four-class average (classes entering Ohio State between 2007-10), the GSR for Buckeye student-athletes was 86 percent. It differs from the federal graduation rate in several ways, most notably by not penalizing schools that have transfers who depart in good academic standing and by counting transfers who enroll into a school in good academic standing. The Wolf Pack's first score was 62 percent in 2005 and the GSR has risen steadily since.
The NCAA's GSR metric allows student-athletes six years to earn their degrees.
Nine programs at Tech either improved or maintained their GSR score from the year before.
"We stress student success in all aspects of the University's mission, and this institutional goal extends to the education and achievement of our student-athletes", University President Marc Johnson said. This year's six Tech teams in that category (again, four-year average) included men's golf, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's soccer, women's swimming and diving and volleyball.
All 13 of Gonzaga's countable programs finished above the national average in their respective sports.
In addition to the GSR, the NCAA established the academic progress rate that provides institutions with a more real-time indicator of academic success. The NCAA also calculates the federal graduation rate for student-athletes because it is the only rate by which to compare student-athletes with the general student body. "We challenged each other, we poured resources into the program and we put great people in place to lead, mentor and educate our student-athletes who have since worked hard to make this happen". The staff is dedicated to guiding each student athlete through college from time of enrollment into the college to graduation.
The Marsha Sharp Center for Student Athletes has spaces for private study, computer labs, supplemental-instruction classrooms and a private conferencing area for tutoring and mentoring appointments for the student athletes at Tech, according to the release.
